Installation, repair and testing

Backflow prevention, installed and tested correctly

A plumber installs a backflow prevention device at the point where an irrigation system or other fixture connects to the water supply, then tests it to confirm it closes properly and stops water from being pulled backward into the drinking supply.

  • Installed at the connection point, tested before sign-off
  • Irrigation systems and other cross-connection points

Why does an irrigation system need a backflow preventer?

An irrigation system connects directly to the same water supply that feeds the house, and under certain conditions, such as a drop in municipal water pressure, water can be pulled backward from the irrigation side into that supply instead of flowing outward as intended. Because irrigation lines run through soil, fertilizer and standing water, that backward flow can carry contaminants into the drinking water system if nothing stops it. A backflow prevention device closes automatically the moment flow tries to reverse.

This is exactly why lawn irrigation near lakes and canals gets attention here: those systems draw on the same water supply as the house, and a device that has never been tested is one that nobody has actually confirmed will do its job when it matters most, during a genuine pressure drop on the municipal side. Testing itself is quick, but it is the only way to actually confirm a device that looks fine from the outside is still closing the way it should.

Signs to watch for

When backflow prevention needs attention

Applies to irrigation systems and other connections that touch the water supply. A device that was installed correctly years ago can still fail quietly, which is exactly what testing is for.

  • No device installed on an irrigation system

An irrigation line connected directly to the water supply with nothing preventing backflow.

  • A device that has never been tested

Installed at some point, but never confirmed to still be working correctly.

  • Visible leaking or dripping from the device

Water discharging from the device when it should be sealed.

  • A recent drop in municipal water pressure

A situation where backflow is more likely to actually occur.

  • An irrigation system added after the original plumbing

A sprinkler system installed later is sometimes tied into the water supply without its own dedicated backflow device, which is worth confirming.

  • A property changing ownership

A backflow device’s test history is worth confirming during a sale, the same way a sewer lateral condition is.

Questions

What people ask before booking

Do I need a backflow preventer if I already have irrigation?

If your irrigation system connects to the household water supply and does not already have a tested device, yes, it is worth having installed and checked.

Does the device need to be tested regularly?

Yes, a device that has never been tested is not confirmed to be working: testing verifies it closes correctly when it needs to.

Is this required by code?

Requirements vary by property and connection type, and a plumber can tell you what applies to your specific situation when you call.

How long does installation or testing take?

Most backflow device installations and tests are completed within a single visit.

What does a failed backflow test actually mean?

It means the device is no longer reliably stopping water from moving backward into the drinking supply, and it needs repair or replacement before it is considered compliant again.

Can one device cover more than one irrigation zone?

It depends on how the system was originally plumbed; a plumber can confirm whether your existing device covers every zone or whether a zone was added without one.

Never had it tested?

Get your backflow device installed or checked

If your irrigation system has never had a backflow device tested, now is a reasonable time. Tell us when the device was installed, if you know, and when it was last tested.

No obligation. Ask about testing when you call, even if you are not sure a device is installed.
